About Sunday Supper
What's on Your Plate?
by Brenda Trigg
What’s on your plate Sunday evening, January 15, 2012—the night before Martin Luther King, Jr., Day?
No commitments? Great! That means you’re free to take one small step in transforming yourself from “dreamer” to “doer” by sharing in America’s Sunday Supper. Celebrating Dr. King’s legacy of service and social justice, America’s Sunday Supper is your opportunity to act on your innermost desire to make a difference in your world. How? By starting where you live. By getting to know your neighbors, whether they’re across the hall, across the street or across town.
Consider America’s Sunday Supper the gigantic cosmic push—or gentle spiritual nudge—you need to reach out and join hands with those who may be outside your email and phone contacts but who care deeply about what’s going on in your community. America’s Sunday Supper invites people from all walks of life to come together, have a bite to eat, watch a movie and talk about the most pressing social issues they face locally.

America’s Sunday Supper is about having a conversation that includes diverse viewpoints and voices on social concerns. It’s not about the size of the group or numbers of people who attend; it’s about the collective focus on key priorities for progress. It’s not about “me;” it’s about “we.” It’s about we the people who, by being “other-centered,” as Dr. King said in his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech, are able to build up what those who are “self-centered” have torn down.
What do we, as members of America’s communities, dream about? Seeing more families break the shackles of poverty through literacy, higher education and employment? Reducing violence? Becoming healthier through better diet and exercise? Feeding more of the hungry? Sheltering more of the homeless? Being better parents to our children and children to our parents?
Let’s share our dreams at America’s Sunday Supper, January 15, 2012—and then get busy working together to realize them.
